Celebrating Day of Photonics
More than 30 years ago, on October 21th, 1983 it was officially announced that speed of light is 299 792.458 km/s. From 2014 the world started celebrating this day as the Day of Photonics.
This year Center for Physical Sciences and Technology (FTMC) together with Laser and Engineering Technologies cluster (LITEK) helped not to forget about this date and organized several excursions to Department of Laser Technologies in FTMC, UAB „3D prototypes“ and UAB „Ekspla“ laboratories. Presentations session about laser importance in our life and laser show in the evening also took a part of the Day of Photonics event.
Everybody who was interested could come and participate in the event: from business representatives, partners and clients, employees to students and others. Participants were welcomed by representatives from each company waiting to show their laboratories, capabilities, working places and explain what they are doing. After excursions presentations session started where everyone was welcomed to listen to Doc. Gediminas Račiukaitis (FTMC) who was telling about lasers in our environment, Doc. senior research fellow Mindaugas Gedvilas (FTMC) and Doc. Roaldas Gadonas who were talking about laser applications in micro processing and three-dimensional micro world. Also chief engineer Edgaras Dvinelis (UAB „Brolis Semiconductors“) introduced everyone to photonics usage in production field and a guest from Japan “Yokohama National University” Prof. Yoshiaki Nishijima prepared presentation „Plasmatic materials toward gas sensor applications“. After the session participants together with professors were continuing their conversation while raising a glass for 33 years ago confirmed speed of light. The most spectacular was the end of event when UAB Optronika prepared and fascinated everyone with their laser show.
